North Shore Sanitary District Launches

Environmental Improvement Project to Protect Lake Forest’s Lakefront

The North Shore Sanitary District (NSSD), with the cooperation of the City of Lake Forest, is constructing its $8.6 million dollar environmental improvement project at the NSSD lakefront pumping station located at Forest Park.  The construction project consists of a two-million gallon below-grade sewage storage basin, an electrical and odor control building, minor modifications to the existing pumping station, and parking lot and access road restorations.

Construction of the sewage storage basin and associated environmental improvements is anticipated to be completed in July 2008.  The storage capacity provided by the new basin will reduce the likelihood of future sewage overflows to Lake Michigan.  Overflows have occurred in the past due to excessive influent flows during wet weather and loss of power from the electrical utility.

The new storage basin will also allow the pumping station to be taken offline to proactively analyze and implement forcemain repairs before potential failures occur.  The construction project demonstrates the sound investment the NSSD and the City continue to make to protect the community’s environmental resources.
